Historical Walking Tour of Westbrook
Are you visiting Westbrook for the first time? Have you lived here your whole life but don’t know its rich history? Do you live far away but are considering a visit to Westbrook? If so, this fun, interactive walking tour is designed for you! You can take a self-guided tour along the beach or through the quaint center of town, or walk beneath a canopy of trees as you explore the historical buildings and cemeteries that Westbrook has to offer. Discover the graves of ship captains and reverends, and take a peek into the stories of people long gone to explore the history of our tiny town.
These walking tour routes were designed and researched by Juliana Fabrizi, a Girl Scout and 18-year resident of Westbrook. She created the tours for her Girl Scout Gold Award in 2020.

Choose one of three great walking tours:
This tour travels along Boston Post Road, from the Westbrook Historical Society on the town green to Water’s Edge Resort and Spa. This short walk borders the Boston Post Road and passes the Westbrook Public Library and the Post Office as well as the Oxford Academy School, which dates back to the 18th century. It ends at the Water’s Edge Resort and Spa, the only five-star resort in Connecticut. You can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea at Julie’s Cup of Joe on your way back to the Town Center. You can choose whether to start your tour at the Historical Society or at Water’s Edge. Simply scroll to the end of the tour and work your way to the beginning. This tour takes a leisurely 25-30 minutes, and it is 0.70 miles long. |
This tour starts and ends on the green, at the Westbrook Historical Society, and features the historical Lower Cemetery, the Captain Stannard House, and the Back-Door Tavern. It’s a pleasant walk along a tree-shaded sidewalk, crossing the Patchogue River (twice!) with extensive views of the salt marsh. If you choose to begin by traveling down South Main Street (southwest from the green), you will continue on to Wesley Avenue, then loop back around to the Historical Society on Old Clinton Road. If you choose to begin by going up Old Clinton Road (northwest from the green), you will continue along this road, turn left onto Wesley Avenue, and left again up South Main Street. Simply scroll to the end of the tour and go through backwards to the beginning. This tour takes a leisurely 40-45 minutes, and it is 1.50 miles long. |
This tour begins at the Westbrook Historical Society and takes you past Dunkin’ and down Seaside Avenue past the Westbrook Elks Lodge. This refreshing walk takes you alongside the Westbrook Town Beach where you can enjoy the cool, salty breeze, hear the gentle lapping of the waves, and admire the charming cottages that peer over Long Island Sound. At West Beach, you can sit down on one of the benches overlooking the Sound, catch some rays while lying on the beach, or wade in the cool salt water. Enjoy a pulled pork sandwich, an ice cream cone, or a cold drink at Hog Wild on the beach before heading back along Seaside Avenue. The tour takes a leisurely 35-40 minutes, and it is 1.70 miles long. |
